Cultural Responisveness
Counseling cannot be one-size-fits-all. No two people are the same, let alone two people from different cultures. By culture, I don't just mean race, ethnicity or nationality, I mean also gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and ability. I don't use the term cultural competence, because I don't think a set of trainings or a certain amount of knowledge makes you competent. Instead, I strive for cultural responsiveness, which is a practice rather than a credential. This means self-awareness, continual self-work, respect, humility, openness, curiosity, flexibility, and willingness to learn and engage in difficult conversations.
